In a surprising turn of events, Ryan Leaf, the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, expressed doubts about Williams during a recent appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show." Leaf, known for his insights into quarterback evaluations, suggested that Williams may not be ready to step in as a Day 1 starter for the team that drafts him.

Leaf emphasized that a significant portion of Williams' skill set might not seamlessly transition to the NFL without further development. He cautioned teams considering Williams as the No. 1 pick to be prepared for a scenario where the young quarterback might need time to acclimate to the professional level.

"If you take him, you better be under the understanding that you're going to sit him this year — and that's not going to happen," Leaf remarked about the potential top pick.

Leaf delved into specifics, pointing out that a substantial part of Williams' success in college, such as not playing under center, not playing on time, and relying heavily on pocket play, might pose challenges in the NFL. According to Leaf, Williams needs time to adapt and refine his game to succeed at the highest level.

In contrast to Williams, Leaf identified two quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft whom he believes could start Day 1: Jayden Daniels and Michael Penix Jr. Leaf singled out Penix's accuracy as a key factor, positioning him as the top quarterback prospect in this year's draft.
