NFL coach Jim Schwartz steps down after power struggle as coaching future fades
The Cleveland Browns are suddenly facing another shake-up, and this one came fast. On Friday, the team confirmed that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has resigned, ending his run with the franchise effective immediately. The move came just weeks after Cleveland completed its head coach hiring process, a decision that left Schwartz frustrated, according to league reports.
Schwartz had interviewed twice for the head coaching job and was widely viewed inside the building as a serious option. Instead, the Browns went in another direction. While the team hoped Schwartz would stay on as defensive coordinator, that plan did not last long. His exit now forces Cleveland into an unexpected search at a critical point in the offseason.
According to NFL Network, Jim Schwartz resigned “expecting” that he may not land another NFL job in 2026.
The Browns confirmed his departure in a team statement, saying, “Yesterday, Jim Schwartz submitted his letter of resignation as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. We’d like to thank Jim for his contributions to our organization over the last three seasons. Our search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately.”
The resignation followed the Browns’ decision to hire Todd Monken as head coach after parting ways with Kevin Stefanski at the end of the 2025 season.
Several reported candidates withdrew during the process, including Jesse Minter, Grant Udinski, and Mike McDaniel, which reportedly left Schwartz believing he was in a strong position.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Schwartz began saying goodbye to staff members shortly after the head coach announcement and appeared visibly upset. Despite the abrupt ending, Schwartz leaves behind strong defensive results.
Last season, Cleveland ranked third in opponent passing yards per game at 167.2 and fifth in total yards allowed at 283.6. Star pass rusher Myles Garrett repeatedly praised Schwartz’s impact after winning NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Schwartz has coached in the league since 1996 and previously served as head coach of the Detroit Lions, along with coordinator roles for multiple franchises. While his Browns chapter ends here, league interest in him is still expected.
