According to Strauss’ report, former NFL insider Dianna Russini contacted a crisis communications expert soon after a New York Post reporter reached out with the photos. The same report stated she also coordinated with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel on how to respond before the story went public. That detail has now become central to the controversy. The viral post reads, “Russini and Vrabel coordinated their crisis response. Neither could prove (to the Post or the Athletic) their initial claims that they were on separate trips with friends. Athletic asked Russini for texts or “photos proving her girls hiking trip claim-- nope”



The Page Six report showed Russini and Vrabel at an Arizona resort appearing close, including moments when they held hands. Both denied any romantic involvement and claimed they were part of a larger group. However, the questions began to grow when no supporting evidence surfaced.


Executives at The Athletic asked Russini to provide proof. This included texts, travel details, or photos from the trip that could confirm the presence of others. According to the ESPN report, none of that evidence was submitted. That gap added pressure internally.


Before the story broke, Russini also made her case to Meredith Kopit Levien, CEO of the New York Times Company, as ESPN reported on April 17. She described the situation as a “sexist attack on a female reporter in a male-dominated field.” The Athletic initially backed her. But that stance shifted as the review process began.


Russini addressed the situation in her resignation letter posted on April 16, 2026. “Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now,” she wrote, adding she did not want to “lend it further oxygen.”


The internal investigation by The Athletic is still ongoing despite her exit. Meanwhile, Vrabel, now head coach of the New England Patriots, has not issued a public statement.


With no clear evidence and new details emerging, the story has moved beyond speculation. It now centres on credibility, response strategy, and unanswered questions.
