Mike Evans has a new address, a new locker room, and a fresh challenge waiting in the Bay Area. The veteran wide receiver agreed to a lucrative three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers this week, a move that immediately grabbed attention across the league. After more than a decade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 32-year-old now finds himself at the center of San Francisco’s latest push toward another Super Bowl run.
The signing did not happen quietly. Evans arrived at the team facility on March 12 with his family by his side, smiling as cameras captured the moment he officially began this new chapter. The 49ers shared clips of the moment on social media, including one of Evans stepping out of his car with the caption, “Ladies and gentleman, Mike Evans ”. Another photo followed soon after, showing Evans alongside his wife Ashli Evans and their four children, captioned simply, “Signed. Sealed. Delivered ✍️”.
Mike Evans joins 49ers offense seeking a new chapter and another title run
San Francisco pursued Evans for clear reasons. The team entered the offseason thin at wide receiver after trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders while Brandon Aiyuk missed all of last season with injury. The front office wanted experience, size, and a reliable target who could still stretch the field. Evans checked every box.
Even after an injury-shortened 2025 season ended his remarkable streak of 11 straight 1,000-yard campaigns, Evans remains one of the league’s most respected receivers. Pairing him with playmakers like Christian McCaffrey could quickly reshape the 49ers offense. The idea is simple. Add a proven deep threat and force defenses to spread out again.
For Evans, the move came with mixed emotions. Tampa had been home since the beginning of his NFL journey.
“It was always going to be hard to leave Tampa,” Evans said during an introductory press conference on Thursday.
“I was there 12 years. A lot of friends out there. My family has friends out there. My kids built a life there. My wife. But football-wise, this was the best spot for me.”
San Francisco believes Evans can still play at a high level, especially within an offense that already features dynamic weapons. The veteran seems confident about the role he can play.
"I feel like they were one piece away and I'm that piece," Evans said.
The transition also brings a major life change for his family. Evans and Ashli have been married since 2016 after meeting during their college years in Texas, when Evans played alongside Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M. Their appearance at the team facility turned the contract signing into a family moment rather than just a business move.
Evans’ agent, Deryk Gilmore, framed the decision in simple terms.
"In the end, this decision simply came down to Mike wanting a new challenge and a fresh opportunity while he still feels he has a great deal left to give the game," Gilmore wrote in a statement.
The 49ers are betting that opportunity turns into production. And if Evans delivers the way he has for most of his career, San Francisco’s offense might look dangerous again very quickly.
