The Los Angeles Rams did not leave Seattle wondering if Matthew Stafford can still play. That question was answered at Lumen Field. What lingered instead was how long the franchise can realistically ride with him as its only plan at quarterback.Stafford threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns in a 31–27 loss to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game. The Rams gained 479 total yards and stayed within one score until the final minutes. Still, the season ended short of a Super Bowl, and the timing of the loss pushed future planning into the open.

Rams are predicted to trade up for a Matthew Stafford successor in 2026

The Sporting News highlighted a projection from ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz that pointed directly to the 2026 NFL Draft. In an ESPN futures analysis published after the conference championship weekend, Schatz predicted the Rams would move aggressively to secure their next quarterback.“The Rams will trade up in the draft for a quarterback,” Schatz wrote in the ESPN article. “They need a young talent for when Stafford is ready to hang ’em up, whether that’s this offseason or in a few years. What better time to plan for the future than when they have two first-round picks?”The quote reflects long-term strategy, not an imminent breakup.
Stafford turns 38 in February and remains under contract through the 2026 season. He showed no physical decline in 2025 and guided the Rams past the Panthers in the wild-card round and the Bears in the divisional round before the loss in Seattle. After the game, Stafford made it clear he had no interest in discussing his future. Speaking to reporters in the Rams locker room, he said he could not summarize months of decisions minutes after a playoff defeat and wanted to keep the focus on the team’s run.Head coach Sean McVay took a similar stance during his postgame press conference on January 25. He declined to address Stafford’s future and instead pointed to execution and missed chances, including a failed fourth-and-4 at the Seattle 6-yard line with under five minutes left. That tension explains why the draft projection exists. The Rams remain in a win-now window. At the same time, quarterback transitions punish teams that wait too long. Trading up in 2026 would allow Los Angeles to prepare without forcing change too early. The conversation is not about replacing Stafford today. It is about making sure the Rams are not unprepared tomorrow.
