“Lose their protection”: Tom Brady has criticized the perception that the NFL officiating favors Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs
Tom Brady has spoken out against the notion that the NFL officiating is biased towards Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, saying that offensive players need to take more responsibility for their own protection. He criticizes the inconsistent roughing of passer calls and questionable penalties against Mahomes in recent playoff games, arguing that these rules compromise game integrity and unfairly shift the balance.
Fox analyst Tom Brady had the conversation of the day regarding the narrative of the league keeping Mahomes from taking some late hits on The Herd. Brady, the poster boy of questionable calls as a player with the Patriots, responded well thought out while maintaining the difference between league rules and the officials.
“There’s an aspect that I don’t like about some of these defensive rules,” Tom Brady told Colin Cowherd. “The reality for me is that offensive players need to protect themselves. If they’re running full speed and the defenders are coming up—the only way to turn the ball over is to create force, you’re not going to blow on the football and knock its way out of a running back’s hands or a quarterback’s hands.”
He added, “You’re trying to disrupt the pass, you’re trying to dislodge the ball. The only way to do that is with force, and there needs to be an aggressiveness to doing that. When quarterbacks become running backs and they’re out of the pocket, they should lose their protection.”
Brady also shared that he thinks a league rule change on how quarterbacks are protected in the game. “Who’s protecting the quarterback?” continued Brady. “We’re trying to say the referee should do it?... If you’re running with the ball, you should protect yourself. If you don’t want to get hit, you can go down, you can run out of bounds. But you can’t in essence have the defensive player come in at half speed and then you run over the defensive player because he’s afraid of getting a penalty. I think it’s just a disservice to the game.”

The most interesting comments, in this case, are those Brady made regarding the diving attempt that Mahomes performed in the fourth quarter-the refs didn't intervene, but the Chiefs' quarterback later acknowledged he probably should not have dived. Here are some relevant stats suggesting the Mahomes-Chiefs duo greatly outpaces everybody else in penalty disparity during playoff games, although there isn't a clear remedy for this.

Tom Brady spoke out against the notion that the NFL officiating is biased towards the Chiefs
A winner of the divisional round, Houston Texas, shifted the play's emphasis from penalties to its narrative fabric. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received controversial calls in a 23-14 win against the Texans, thus enjoying soft roughing and what some saw as unnecessary penalties. The backlash went viral in outrage since some perceive that referees give special treatment to Mahomes and his team.“There’s an aspect that I don’t like about some of these defensive rules,” Tom Brady told Colin Cowherd. “The reality for me is that offensive players need to protect themselves.
