The game was a rollercoaster ride, marked by Jared Goff’s tumultuous performance. The Lions' quarterback threw a career-high five interceptions, three of which came in the first half alone. Houston capitalized on these turnovers, taking a commanding 23-7 lead into halftime.

However, the Lions refused to be deterred. They mounted a furious comeback in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points. David Montgomery punched in a 3-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, followed by a crucial 9-yard touchdown reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown.

With the game hanging in the balance, Bates stepped up to the plate, drilling a 58-yard field goal to tie the score with just over five minutes remaining. The Texans had a chance to regain the lead, but Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 58-yard field goal attempt fell short. (via Detroit Press)

The stage was set for a dramatic finish. With seconds ticking away, the Lions marched down the field, setting up Bates for the game-winning kick. The young kicker calmly split the uprights, sending the Lions’ sideline into a frenzy and silencing the Texans’ home crowd.

Post game, Bates opined on his historic win. “I just don’t deserve this,” Bates said. “I was a soccer player growing up. I idolized football players in the NFL, and just to be here is surreal. I’m still pinching myself.”

“We didn’t make the plays to win the game ... to win games guys have to step up and make plays and that’s not happening,” Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said.

Detroit’s victory was a testament to their resilience and determination. Despite Goff’s struggles, the team rallied around him, showcasing their ability to overcome adversity. The Lions will look to continue their winning streak as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.
