Lions May Be On The Fence About A Veteran And Eyeing Amon-Ra St. Brown’s Rival

It’s no secret that the Detroit Lions will need to take a call on veteran starting cornerback Carlton Davis, who is hitting free agency this offseason. Davis was at his peak in 2024, while playing for the Lions, after being acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, his season ended early due to an injury. So, the Lions need to decide whether they want to sign Davis and what exactly the possibilities are with Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Meanwhile, rumour has it that the Lions may be eyeing Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis, who has a rather problematic history with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The 33rd Team's Marcus Mosher suggests Lions should sign Lewis this offseason. Let’s consider the logistics of this. The Lions currently have $46.5 million in cap space for 2025. It’s possible that the Lions are still interested in signing Davis; it’s likely that their interest will hinge on price and their plans for Rakestraw Jr., who could operate out of the slot or on the boundary, but did not quite show a whole lot of promise in his rookie campaign. So, the Lions may be bringing Davis back or even signing another veteran.

In a situation like this, a player like Lewis could help out the team quite substantially. He’s known for his skills in the slot and is projected to command an $8 million deal for a year, which works out well for the Lions. Lewis had the best season of his career this year and he’s not a rookie; in fact, his skills as a slot defender are quite seasoned. But there’s a chance that recruiting Lewis may need to some tensions within the team, considering his history with St. Brown.

In July, St.Brown appeared on an episode of The Pivot Podcast and revealed that Lewis was one of his "least favourite" cornerbacks in the NFL. He also claimed that the defensive back had said something unhinged on the field when the Lions and Cowboys played last year.
"He was talking crazy out of pocket," St. Brown said on The Pivot podcast. "Even [Lions wideout Jameson Williams] heard it, too. He was coming in. At that point, it's like, I don't know what he's saying. I'm trying to make plays, win the game. I'm not worried about him. But once he starts talking like that, it's like, all right, if I do get a chance to kill him, (I'm going to) kill him."
Lewis went on to respond and said that he is passionate about his craft and he doesn’t want to be friends with everyone, “especially a Detroit Lion not from Detroit." In October, a day after the Lions' 47-9 win over the Cowboys, St. Brown shared a screenshot of a DM from Lewis reading, "You a b---h."
