One of the big quarterbacks of Las Vegas Raiders, Gardner Minshew, chose to extend his college football career back in 2016. Back in 2019, a Barstool show, "Pardon My Take," aired an episode that included a plan he designed in 2016 that was dangerous. In the 2019 NFL draft, Minshew was picked in the sixth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars and played there for two seasons before setting the franchise record for rookie passing touchdowns.

He moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles and played as a reserve for two seasons. Then he became a starting member with the Indianapolis Colts during 2023. With multiple career-high marks in a season, he managed to get into the Pro Bowl. He was with the Raiders the following year and started for them.

How Gardner Minshew tried to save the last year of college eligibility

Third-string quarterback Gardner Minshew tried to save the last year of college eligibility by redshirting for a medical reason. Moving to East Carolina, there were already two quarterbacks taking snaps for the Pirates: seniors. Minshew hoped to redshirt to gain his three-year eligibility while sitting on the sidelines for a medical year; his attempt involved a hammer and a bottle of Jack Daniels. Minshew, whose injuries made playing possible, saw his redshirt year slipping away then came up with a very wild scheme to self-inflict a severe injury so he'd get a redshirt without playing a whole season.

Minshew recalls that night, "I went home, grabbed a bottle of Jack Daniels and a hammer, and gave it a try." Minshew recounted trying to break his hand with a hammer, resulting in a bruised, swollen hand. After three rounds, he realized he couldn't continue with it, despite his repeated attempts to break it with whiskey. Minshew admitted, "I knew it wasn't broken. One more time, another pull, another three- and that was all I could take.”

Minshew, left with a swollen hand due to a car door accident, played seven games that season and eventually became the team's full-time starter the following year. He transferred to Washington State and caught the attention of NFL scouts. In 2019, he entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars, launching a career that has since led to his current team, the Las Vegas Raiders.

His experience marked him as someone willing to go to extremes to pursue his passion for football. Minshew laughed about his dedication, stating, "What would you do for more football? Cause I'd do damn near anything.”
