Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was fined $14,069 for celebrating gun gestures during a 30-21 loss against the Buffalo Bills. Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion, completed a short touchdown pass to tight end Noah Gray, reducing Buffalo's lead to just two points.

He celebrated by extending both hands, pointing two fingers, simulating the motion of holding a long-range weapon, a gesture often linked to precision throwing or sinking a long shot in an NBA game. CBS replayed the celebration without concern as the game went to commercial. NFL insiders later announced the fine for violating its "violent gestures" policy on social media a week following the game.

The NFL has fined Patrick Mahomes for celebrating gun gestures

The NFL is imposing a fine of $14,069 on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes stemming from a "violent gesture" he made during a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Noah Gray in the loss to the Buffalo Bills. The league deemed the gesture to be a mimic of using guns. Thus, the league is attempting to set an example for its biggest star.

Mahomes struggled with 196 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in a game against the New York Giants even as the team came out on top. His $14,069 fine was but a trifle in the context of his $182 million career earnings, as he goes into the fifth year of a $450 million deal with the organization. This isn't the first player to be monetarily punished for such an action. CeeDee Lamb and Allan Lazard have also faced fines for the same transgressions. Mahomes has been fined only once in his eight-year career: against the Bills. Last season, he was fined $50k for verbal abuse of officials.

The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Carolina Panthers for the first time since last year in Charlotte after suffering their first loss of the year at the hands of the Bills. The Panthers are two weeks removed from winning their third game of 2024, and they used Sunday's narrow 20-17 victory over the New York Giants in overtime to gain their first winning streak in two years. The Chiefs will play their next game at home for the first time since Week 10, but most of their remaining games will be on the road to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
