Josh Allen’s offseason opened with more questions than celebrations. A playoff exit, a coaching shakeup, and a visible injury left the Bills quarterback facing one of the most demanding stretches of his career. Buffalo believed it had a championship window. Instead, the year closed with frustration and change.
Now Allen shifts from survival mode to reset mode. What he revealed at the team’s latest press conference showed how much he carried through the final weeks of the season and why this offseason will test him in more ways than one.
Josh Allen reveals foot surgery after grinding through injury as he steps into the new phase of his life
On January 29, 2029, during the Buffalo Bills’ introductory press conference for new head coach Joe Brady, Allen stood before reporters in a walking boot and on crutches. He confirmed he had surgery earlier in the week to repair a fifth metatarsal avulsion fracture in his right foot. He originally dealt with the injury earlier in the season and aggravated it in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, yet continued to play.
“Obviously, not an ideal situation,” Allen said at that press conference. “Painful throughout the weeks, but again, on game day, it’s a different story, just being able to put that to the side and just go out there and play football.”
Buffalo went 2-2 after that point. The run included a wild-card win over the Jacksonville Jaguars before the season ended in a divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos. That defeat still lingers.
“If I make one more play in Denver, we’re not sitting here right now having this press conference,” Allen said. “We’re probably getting ready to play another game.”
The loss marked the end of the Sean McDermott era. The Bills promoted Brady, their former offensive coordinator. Allen admitted the change felt emotional but praised Brady’s energy and commitment, saying the new coach spends nearly all his time in the building working to improve the team.
Doctors expect Allen’s recovery to take eight to ten weeks, which keeps him on schedule for offseason work. But football does not own his entire focus. At that same press conference, Allen also spoke about preparing for fatherhood with his wife,
Hailee Steinfeld, who is expecting their first child. He smiled when asked how he plans to balance rehab and a newborn.
“I don’t know if you can plan too far in advance,” Allen said. Later, he added, “This is the most important thing I’ll ever be in my life — is being a dad.”
While Josh Allen's eight seasons in the NFL tested his body and his team, the months ahead will test his balance, patience, and a beautiful chapter as a father.
