NEW DELHI: As the Cincinnati Bengals find themselves in need of a quarterback following Joe Burrow's season-ending injury, speculations have arisen about potential replacements, with former
NFL star Colin Kaepernick's name making the rounds. However, recent insights suggest that the Bengals are looking within their roster for a solution, and it appears that free agent Kaepernick might not receive the call.
NFL Insider Dov Kleiman recently compiled a list of eleven veteran quarterbacks who could potentially fill Burrow's shoes.
This list included notable names like Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, and Cam Newton. Despite the speculation, it seems that the Bengals are opting for an in-house solution rather than seeking external options.
The current backup quarterback for the Bengals is Jake Browning, who is set to step into the starting role for the remainder of the season in the absence of Joe Burrow. Browning, a Washington alum, has been with the Bengals since 2021, serving as Burrow's backup during this time.
Browning boasts an impressive college career with the Washington Huskies, where he became the school's all-time passing leader. His collegiate achievements include 12,296 passing yards, 94 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. Additionally, Browning showcased his versatility with 244 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
Despite these impressive numbers, Browning went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was subsequently signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent, spending two seasons with the team before being waived ahead of the 2021 NFL season. Cincinnati then signed him to their practice squad, and Browning's gradual progress within the franchise led to a reserve/future contract in February 2022.
Entering the 2023 NFL season, Browning competed with veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian for the role of Bengals' backup quarterback. Browning emerged victorious, securing a spot on the depth chart and earning the responsibility of backing up Joe Burrow for the 2023 season.
