The Buffalo Bills have made another major addition to their coaching staff, as head coach Joe Brady continues to reshape the team ahead of the 2026 season. In a significant move, the Bills are set to hire Denver Broncos assistant Jim Leonhard as their new defensive coordinator.Leonhard, who served as the Broncos’ defensive pass game coordinator and assistant head coach, now heads to Buffalo to take charge of a defense that showed promise but lacked consistency at key moments last season.

Jim Leonhard reunites with his former team

This move carries added meaning for Leonhard. Before becoming a respected coach, he began his NFL playing career in Buffalo after going undrafted in 2005. He spent three seasons with the Bills and returned for a second stint in 2013.
Over a 10-year playing career, he built a reputation as a smart, instinctive safety. Now, more than a decade later, he returns to the franchise in a leadership role.Leonhard’s coaching resume has grown steadily over the years. After retiring as a player, he began his coaching journey at Wisconsin, his alma mater. He served as defensive coordinator there from 2017 to 2022 and even stepped in as interim head coach during the 2022 season.
During his time at Wisconsin, his defenses were among the best in college football. In multiple seasons, the Badgers ranked inside the top 10 nationally in total defense and points allowed. His ability to develop disciplined, physical units earned him recognition across the country.

Jim Leonhard's strong track record

Leonhard joined Sean Payton’s staff in Denver ahead of the 2024 season as defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2025.
Under his watch, the Broncos built one of the NFL’s top defenses. Denver ranked among the league leaders in both total defense and points allowed over the past two seasons. The unit was particularly strong against the pass, helping the team make a deep playoff run.He was reportedly a popular candidate this coaching cycle, drawing interest from multiple teams including the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers. In the end, Buffalo secured his services. While the Bills finished 12th in points allowed last season, they struggled badly against the run, ranking near the bottom of the league in rushing yards conceded. That weakness was exposed in the postseason. With Pete Carmichael hired as offensive coordinator and Leonhard now leading the defense, Joe Brady has quickly put his stamp on the coaching staff. As the Bills look to push deeper into the playoffs, this move signals a clear intent: build a tougher, more disciplined defense to complement their explosive offense.
