Jets linked to veteran Pro Bowl quarterback in early 2026 projection

The New York Jets have been looking for a stable quarterback for a long time. In 2026, they might go for an established veteran instead of another youngster, which would be a typical move for the team. After another poor season, several in the NFL think the Jets might put more emphasis on experience at quarterback as they try to fix their offense.

Bleacher Report's first offseason prediction says that the Jets could be a good place for Kirk Cousins, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback who is presently under contract with the Atlanta Falcons. There haven't been any official conversations yet, but the rationale behind the fit is already getting a lot of attention across the league.

Why the Jets are looking for veterans

The Jets' 2025 season showed once again that they can't find a good quarterback. A brief experiment with Justin Fields didn't work out, and New York is again toward the bottom of the rankings and looking for answers again. There are several interesting young players in the upcoming draft, but there is growing worry within the organization about putting another rookie in an uncertain situation.



This is when Cousins comes into play. Even though he is getting close to the end of his career, the veteran has stayed effective when healthy and when the offense is working well. For a team that needs skill more than flare, Cousins is a safer, short-term choice.

Cousins signed a huge $180 million deal with Atlanta in 2024, but injuries and being benched late in the season make it hard to say what his long-term career will be. He started seven games in relieving duty in 2025 and proved that he could still run an NFL offense well.



For the Jets, Cousins would not be viewed as a long-term saviour but rather a bridge quarterback. With young offensive talent already in place, including Garrett Wilson, New York could afford to pair a veteran signal-caller with a rookie drafted to patiently develop behind him a luxury the franchise has rarely enjoyed.

Importantly, any move for Cousins would depend on assurances. Analysts believe the quarterback would only consider New York if given clarity that he would not be benched midseason in favour of a rookie, a scenario that derailed his final months in Atlanta.

While drafting a quarterback remains firmly on the table, linking the Jets to Cousins suggests a more cautious approach is gaining traction. After a decade of false starts, New York may finally be ready to prioritise stability over speculation.
