Jerry Jones did not hide his feelings after the Dallas Cowboys barely escaped with a Week 2 win against the New York Giants. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan after the game, the Cowboys’ owner said the defense must take more responsibility under head coach Matt Eberflus. Jones emphasized that the players should manage their responsibilities and follow the strategy. His remarks followed the defense's surrender of three touchdowns and 450 passing yards to seasoned quarterback Russell Wilson in New York.
Jerry Jones questions Matt Eberflus’ defense
The Cowboys traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the season, and the decision is already being tested. Without Parsons, the defense looked shaky against the Giants.
Jerry Jones said,
“As much as anything, it’s a buying into the scheme. You’ve got to handle your responsibilities. You can’t just be out there trying to make a play. You can’t be a lone ranger out there.” Jones’ message was clear. He believes discipline and teamwork are missing on the defensive side.
While Dallas pulled off a 33-30 overtime win, the defense gave up a 48-yard touchdown to Malik Nabers in the final minute of regulation.
Only Brandon Aubrey’s 64-yard field goal saved the game and forced overtime.
