Belichick, widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, and team owner Robert Kraft made the decision public on Thursday, signaling the end of an era after 24 seasons during which the Patriots clinched six Super Bowl victories.

Jerod Mayo, who had been serving as an assistant coach under Belichick, steps into the role as the youngest current head coach in the NFL. This significant appointment also makes him the first Black head coach in the history of the New England Patriots.

A true Patriot through and through, Mayo's connection with the team goes beyond coaching. The former linebacker had an illustrious playing career, spending all eight years with the Patriots. Mayo's on-field contributions earned him the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2008, and he secured two Pro Bowl selections before retiring in 2016.

Mayo was not just a standout player; he exemplified leadership as a team captain for seven consecutive seasons (2009-2015) and played a crucial role in the Patriots' Super Bowl victory in 2014.

After retiring from professional football, Mayo briefly ventured into finance before returning to the Patriots' fold in 2019, this time as the linebackers coach. His coaching journey under Belichick has now culminated in the significant role of head coach, bringing a fresh perspective to guide the Patriots into a new era.
