Is Owen Schmitt the Next Political Powerhouse? Pat McAfee’s Bold Endorsement on The New Heights Show Ignites Heated Debate in West Virginia

On a recent episode of “The New Heights Show”, former West Virginia University kicker Pat McAfee threw a light on his old teammate Owen Schmitt, boldly declaring that Schmitt should run for governor. The conversation began when Travis Kelce asked McAfee, "Who's the bigger legend in West Virginia? You or Owen Schmitt? " Without a moment's hesitation, McAfee said, "Owen Schmitt, dude. That guy could be governor anytime he wanted." Jason Kelce added a fun fact: "He's a truck driver now. He drives for UPS."

McAfee’s Respect for Schmitt

He brought up the story of his respect for Schmitt, telling how Schmitt drove hour after hour to make it to a WVU game. "As soon as Owen gets in front of that crowd, they pay their respects, man," he said. There is no doubt that Schmitt isn't just a name; the fans know and love him.

McAfee even went to the extent of mentioning the nickname that "Runaway Beer" called it "the most perfect nickname ever given to anybody in history."

A Real Connection

This endorsement is based on true respect because McAfee and Schmitt come from a long history that dates back to college days. It is more of an appreciation for the character of Schmitt himself and his work ethic. As McAfee puts it, Schmitt has got what it takes to be fit for the role based on his deep roots with West Virginia.

Community and Connection

Earlier in 2024, both Schmitt and White served as guest coaches for the Gold-Blue Spring Game at WVU. McAfee put on WVU's Gong Show at the end of training camp. This shows his seriousness toward the university.

Schmitt well described him as "real," and indeed there is an affiliation between them.

Endorsement with Substance

McAfee says that Schmitt should be governor. That sounds like crazy talk to begin with. But there's more to it than just nonsense. These two are Mountaineers through and through, and Schmitt's emergence into politics seems almost organic with this loyalty and leadership he shares with McAfee. If he doesn't run, well, that's his decision. But in West Virginia, they already like him.
