Is Aaron Rodgers’ Steelers run over? Pittsburgh linked to former first round QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be heading toward another major reset at quarterback, and this time, the spotlight is firmly on Aaron Rodgers’ uncertain future. After a disappointing season that ended without a playoff run, reports suggest Pittsburgh may already be exploring alternatives including a possible move for former first-round quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Rodgers joined the Steelers largely because of the presence of long-time head coach Mike Tomlin. But with Tomlin stepping away and the team entering a new phase, questions are growing about whether Rodgers will remain in Pittsburgh beyond 2025.

Aaron Rodgers’ future in doubt after short Steelers stint

At 42, Aaron Rodgers showed flashes of his old brilliance but also struggled with consistency. While his leadership and experience were valued in the locker room, the Steelers once again fell short when it mattered most. The Wild Card loss only added fuel to the debate about whether investing further in an aging quarterback makes sense for a team trying to build long-term stability.



He is set to hit free agency, and with Tomlin no longer on the sidelines, the reasons that brought him to Pittsburgh in the first place appear to be fading. Internally, the Steelers are believed to be weighing whether to move on rather than commit to another short-term gamble.

Pittsburgh linked to former top pick Anthony Richardson

According to recent speculations, the Steelers could target Anthony Richardson, the former first-round pick currently with the Indianapolis Colts. Richardson’s NFL journey has been far from smooth. Injuries disrupted his rookie season, while inconsistency and competition pushed him down the depth chart in later years.

Still, Richardson’s physical tools continue to intrigue teams around the league. At just 23, he offers mobility, arm strength, and upside that Rodgers, at this stage of his career, simply cannot. Analysts believe Pittsburgh’s strong offensive line and run game could provide a safer environment for Richardson to rediscover his form.



One proposed scenario floating around league circles suggests the Steelers could acquire Richardson for mid-round draft picks, a low-risk move compared to investing heavily in another veteran quarterback.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are almost certain to add at least one quarterback this offseason. The bigger question is: do they chase short-term relevance with Rodgers or commit to a younger, developmental option?

Richardson fits the second path. While far from a finished product, he aligns with a team that may be preparing for a longer rebuild rather than quick fixes. The change in coaching leadership also supports the idea of a fresh start at quarterback.

For now, nothing is official. But the growing links to Richardson suggest one thing is clear: Aaron Rodgers’ time in Pittsburgh may already be nearing its end.
