"I'm happy...": New York Jets HC Aaron Glenn sends a clear message on Russell Wilson's interest despite Geno Smith signing
The New York Jets may have added Geno Smith this offseason, but Aaron Glenn still has one eye on the veteran quarterback market. Recently, the Jets' head coach made it clear that the team is not closing the door on another experienced arm, which instantly brought Russell Wilson back into the conversation.
Glenn spoke openly about the situation during his media availability on Friday. While he praised Smith and rookie Cade Klubnik, he also admitted the Jets continue to talk with veteran quarterbacks behind the scenes.
The Jets entered the offseason needing stability at quarterback after moving on from Justin Fields. They answered part of that problem by trading for Geno Smith in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick while also receiving a seventh-round selection back. Then came fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik, whom the organization reportedly targeted aggressively during the draft. Still, the room lacks depth and proven experience beyond Smith. That is exactly why Russell Wilson continues to hover around the Jets rumor mill.
Speaking to reporters during the Jets’ offseason media session, Aaron Glenn admitted the organization remains in contact with veteran quarterbacks. “We’re talking to a number of veteran quarterbacks,” Glenn said Friday. “But I will say this here, and saying that, I’m happy with our quarterback room.”
That answer stood out quickly because Glenn never shut down the possibility of another move. Instead, he balanced confidence in Geno Smith with the need for experience around a young quarterback like Klubnik. Glenn also stressed how important veteran leadership can become once offseason throwing sessions begin. “When those guys get with the vets, and then we get out there and get to throwing the ball around, man, giving those guys as many reps as we can is critical for us,” Glenn added during the same media availability.
Meanwhile, Russell Wilson’s future remains uncertain. According to the New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy, Wilson continues to weigh retirement against television opportunities despite believing he can still play at a high level.
That uncertainty keeps the Jets linked to him. Right now, Glenn appears comfortable with Geno Smith leading the room. However, his latest comments sent another message too. If the right veteran becomes available, the New York Jets are still listening.
