Ice Cube defends NFL’s Taylor Swift spark — but says Travis Kelce is the real showstopper

Ice Cube acknowledges Taylor Swift's impact on attracting female viewers to the NFL, but emphasizes that player performance, particularly Travis Kelce's, remains paramount. The NFL recognizes the 'Swift effect' on female viewership, now at a historic high of 47%. Ultimately, touchdowns and on-field achievements, not celebrity appearances, will define a football legacy.

When pop culture meets pro football, sparks fly — and the NFL is lighting the fuse. Ever since Taylor Swift became a game-day regular supporting Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, the stadium spotlight has widened to include celebrity fandom. But while fans debate the singer’s impact on viewership, rapper Ice Cube says the focus should stay on the game, not the glam.

Ice Cube says focus should be on the field, not the fame

In a recent interview, Ice Cube weighed in on Swift’s widely publicized appearances at Kansas City Chiefs games. While acknowledging the league’s marketing strategy, he made it clear the real value lies in the athletes. “They’re trying to bring women into the sport. And if they gotta use Taylor Swift—so be it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,” Cube said.
He added that, in the end, player performance will always outweigh who’s watching from the suites. “At the end of the day, it’s really about what Travis does on the field. It’s not about what Taylor does in a suite, you know what I mean?” he continued. “Whether she comes or not, Travis still has to perform — and he is performing at a high level.”

Swift’s sideline appearances spark record female viewership

The league isn’t denying the Swift effect.
NFL global brand and consumer marketing VP Marissa Solis recently revealed that women now make up 47% of the NFL’s viewership — a historic high. And many believe the singer’s presence has played a key role in that shift. It all started when Swift showed up at Arrowhead Stadium in September 2023, cheering alongside Kelce’s mom in full Chiefs gear. Since then, she’s attended over a dozen games, including the 2025 Super Bowl, turning football Sundays into pop culture events.Veteran FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews echoed this cultural shift during her Cannes Lions appearance, stating: “Women aren’t as afraid… the casual fan doesn’t feel as afraid to watch professional sports right now, watch the NFL because, well, our girl Taylor helped out with that.”
