Kelly Stafford has never been one to mince words. Whether she’s calling out the NFL over Matthew Stafford’s false COVID-19 positive reports or labeling Michigan a “dictatorship,” her outspoken nature has made headlines more than once. But it turns out that her no-filter attitude extends beyond interviews and social media—right into her home. Even her four daughters aren’t shielded from her colorful vocabulary, and now, Kelly is taking a big step to change that.
Matthew Stafford’s Wife Kelly Finds a Fun Way to Curb Her Swearing Habit Around Their Children
During a recent episode of The Morning After, Kelly Stafford opened up about a moment of self-reflection that hit her during a trip with friends and their kids. Known for her tendency to drop expletives casually, she finally realized how frequently she was doing so in front of children—hers and others.
The Morning After Becoming Our Parents
“God, my mouth is so bad in front of kids… like I realized it on a trip we just took with some friends. I never watch what I say in front of my kids, my kids know the rules and that is what it is but that doesn’t mean I could [swear]. I could be a lot better in front of them and in front of other children but like I said fu*k four times in front of these kids… And I was like ‘Oh My God! I’m so sorry’ because these are like four-year-olds.”
Though her daughters understand that cursing is off-limits for them, Kelly couldn’t help but feel disappointed in herself. Setting an example, after all, is a fundamental part of parenting, and she realized she wasn’t exactly practicing what she preached.
Determined to put an end to her unchecked language, Kelly decided to take an old-school disciplinary approach—a swear jar. She shared how she discussed the idea with her husband, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, in an attempt to hold herself accountable.
“I looked at Matthew and I was like we’ve got to have a swear jar. I always hated a swear jar, because again, I do think these kids need to understand, but at the same time, you got to make an attempt [to work on yourself] than just throw fu*ks around like it’s candy.”
A swear jar, in theory, is a great deterrent, as offenders must drop a fine into the jar each time they let a curse word slip. While Kelly isn’t thrilled about the idea, she recognizes that breaking old habits requires effort.
Kelly and Matthew Stafford are raising four young daughters—twins Sawyer and Chandler, 7, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4. At this stage, parenting is a delicate balance between setting rules and preparing them for the real world. While Kelly’s candid nature is part of her charm, she acknowledges that filtering her words could benefit not just her children but also herself.
