Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy expressed dissatisfaction with Patrick Mahomes' performance at Super Bowl LIX. During an emergency press conference-style video shared on TikTok, Portnoy expressed his disbelief at the Chiefs’ performance. “Emergency press conference, still third quarter, but the Chiefs have embarrassed themselves on a national scale,” he said.
“Absolutely demolished by the Eagles. Patrick Mahomes looks like a JV quarterback.” Portnoy’s criticism didn’t stop there. He took aim at Mahomes’ inability to rise to the occasion, despite the quarterback’s previous successes. “Patrick Mahomes was awful. Couldn’t rise up, horrible throws. No protection, fine. Brady would have found a way,” Portnoy added, referencing Tom Brady’s legendary ability to perform under pressure.
Portnoy refuted comparisons between the Chiefs and Patriots' dynasty, stating that the two teams are not in the same league. “Now, it doesn’t take away from the fact they got three titles. It does stop the conversation - people comparing the New England Patriots’ dynasty and the Chiefs’ dynasty, they don’t even belong on the same field,” he said.
The Chiefs have won four Super Bowls, with Patrick Mahomes leading them to three (2019, 2022, and 2023). However, Portnoy argued that Mahomes' achievements are less than Tom Brady's legacy, stating that the Chiefs would never beat the Patriots dynasty.
Portnoy acknowledged Mahomes' past struggles, including a memorable moment where the quarterback appeared to vomit during a game. “Tom Brady has never puked on himself how Patrick Mahomes just did,” Portnoy quipped. He also acknowledged Mahomes’ dislike for Barstool Sports but insisted that his criticism was based solely on the quarterback’s performance. “I know Patrick Mahomes don’t like Barstool, big deal, but that’s not why. He was awful.”
