Fred Warner injury: Kyle Shanahan provides major update on 49ers LB ahead of wild card game vs Eagles
Fred Warner's return remains a big question for the San Francisco 49ers as they prepare for their NFC Wild Card clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. Ahead of the playoff game, head coach Kyle Shanahan shared a clear but cautious update on the All-Pro linebacker’s recovery.
Warner has been out since October after suffering a broken and dislocated ankle in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He later underwent surgery and was placed on injured reserve, effectively ending his regular season. While the 49ers have pushed their way into the playoffs despite multiple injuries, Shanahan made it clear that Warner’s return is not imminent.
Speaking to reporters, Shanahan said there is a scenario in which Warner could return later in the postseason but only if the 49ers keep winning.
“I think it’s too far off right now,” Shanahan said. “It’s a possibility if we get to a third game, maybe a championship game. But it’s not something we’re thinking about right now.”
The comment suggests that Warner will not play against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round and would only be considered if San Francisco makes a deep playoff run.
This is not the first time Warner has dealt with an ankle injury. Last season, he played through a similar issue, even requiring injections before games just to manage the pain. However, Shanahan stressed that this year’s injury is far more serious.
With the 49ers’ season now extended into January, the team is taking a longer and safer approach rather than rushing their defensive leader back into action.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has also reported that even if Warner does return during the playoffs, it would likely be in a limited role possibly as late as the NFC Championship Game or even the Super Bowl.
Warner’s absence has already hurt the 49ers, but the situation has worsened. Backup linebacker Tatum Bethune recently suffered a season-ending groin injury. Dee Winters and Luke Gifford are also dealing with injuries, leaving San Francisco dangerously thin at the position.
As a result, veteran Eric Kendricks is expected to play a key role against the Eagles. Shanahan expressed confidence in Kendricks, who joined the team late in the season and has seen increased snaps over the past few weeks.
“I’m really confident in Eric,” Shanahan said. “He’s been here long enough, and I’m glad we’ve got him for this situation.”
The San Francisco 49ers have battled injuries all season, and Warner’s health remains central to their playoff hopes. While his return would provide a major boost, the team knows it must survive the early rounds without him.
For now, all eyes are on Sunday’s Wild Card matchup and whether the 49ers can keep winning long enough to make a Fred Warner comeback possible.
