Former NFL Media journalist Jim Trotter has reached a settlement with the NFL to resolve a lawsuit he filed against the league for refusing to address institutional discrimination and not renewing his contract due to his concerns about equity and racial injustice. The NFL will donate to Trotter's scholarship foundation for journalism students attending historically Black colleges and universities.

Jim Trotter of The Athletic has settled a racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, with the NFL agreeing to donate to his Work, Plan, Pray Foundation. The foundation provides scholarships to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities in sports journalism and sports management. “I am proud to have the opportunity to help and support HBCU students to achieve their goals and dreams, just as scholarships afforded me those opportunities when I was a student at Howard University,” Trotter wrote on Twitter.
After the lawsuit became public, the NFL denied Trotter's allegations in a statement, saying, "We share Jim Trotter's passion for quality journalism created in and supported by a diverse and inclusive environment. We take his concerns seriously, but strongly dispute his specific allegations, particularly those made against his dedicated colleagues at NFL Media.” The league also said that rather than firing Trotter, his contract was not renewed due to "a challenging economy and a changing media environment.”
In September 2023, Trotter filed a lawsuit against NFL Media and Network after being fired. The suit alleges that the league terminated his contract due to Trotter's criticism of the NFL's history of race discrimination and lack of diversity. Trotter also claimed that NFL owners' racially charged comments were repeatedly dismissed and the league office is investigating them.
