Eagles RB Saquon Barkley’s Mom Throws Subtle Shade At Giants GM Joe Schoen

Saquon Barkley leads the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl 59 after a stellar performance in the NFC Championship. His parents suggest Joe Schoen's management at the New York Giants held him back. Barkley felt undervalued by the Giants, but is now thriving with the Eagles.

After a terrific season, Saquon Barkley is going to Super Bowl 59. He played a career-defining game at the NFC Championship where he led Philadelphia Eagles to a 55-23 victory over the Washington Commanders. The running back celebrated his win with his girlfriend Anna Congdon, with whom he shares two children.

Is Joe Schoen To Blame? Why Saquon Barkley’s Mum Believes The RB Is Happier With The Eagles

Meanwhile, his parents, who are also elated at their son’s performance opened up about the athlete’s future and also threw a subtle shade at Barkley’s last team, the New York Giants. Barkley's parents, Alibay Barkley and Tonya Johnson were asked why the athlete never reached such heights when he was playing for the Giants and Johnson took aim at New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen.
"You really want me to answer that? Everybody else knows why it didn’t happen," Johnson said. "It's great for him to finally be somewhere where he was able to showcase his talent without people talking about this or that and hearing that running backs don’t deserve this or deserve that. Yeah, OK, now we see."

Though Johnson did not mention Schoen by name, it’s no secret that the Giants were left licking their wounds after witnessing Barkley’s season which convinced fans that the Giants were holding him back. Schoen wanted Barkley to test the open market before handing him a contract. Last year, Barkley said he felt disrespected and that it was “a slap in the face” for Giants GM Joe Schoen to tell him to go out and test the open market without first giving him their offer.

“I felt like the Giants thought I would go out there and get ($9 million a year), maybe eight, stretch at 10, and then come back to them and it’s like ‘Alright, we got you. If you want to come play at ($9 million), you come play at ($9 million), which I think that truly would have got it done,” Barkley said. “I think that’s just where they valued me at, where Joe valued me at. He had a price point that he was willing to pay, and he wasn’t going to go over it, and kudos to him for sticking to his gut.
It’s also worth noting that the Giants didn’t have the offensive line, or the organisation system to let Barkley thrive like he has with the Eagles. During a recent episode of The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, producer Billy Gil cheekily suggested a form of trolling for Giants general manager Joe Schoen. "If the Eagles win they should send Joe Schoen a personalized Super Bowl ring, right?" Gil asked.
"Like just to troll him even more. Like they should send a Super Bowl ring that says "Joe Schoen" and then it has all the little trinkets and everything on it. Maybe put Saquon's numbers, his number in there. Whatever that costs, I think I would do just to mess with him."
