Before his rise to political power, Donald Trump was a key player in the sports business world, particularly as the owner of the New Jersey Generals in the now-defunct United States Football League (USFL). His tenure was marked by high-stakes decisions and bold moves, including an audacious attempt to lure NFL superstar Lawrence Taylor away from the New York Giants.
Donald Trump’s aggressive approach to sports ownership
In 1983, Donald Trump purchased the New Jersey Generals and quickly established himself as a disruptive force in the USFL. Determined to elevate the league to the level of the NFL, he sought to sign high-profile players, pushing the boundaries of conventional sports management. His most controversial move came when he attempted to recruit Lawrence Taylor, one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive players at the time.
The $1 million offer that shook the NFL
At the height of his career, Lawrence Taylor was a household name, known for his game-changing defensive plays and multiple accolades, including two Defensive Player of the Year awards. However, during a contract dispute with the New York Giants, Trump saw an opportunity and acted swiftly.
According to an article by PBS, Trump wired $1 million directly into Taylor’s bank account in an attempt to persuade him to join the Generals. He even signed the linebacker to a future contract, which would have seen Taylor leave the NFL for the USFL.
“Trump frequently drew attention by sparring with the NFL,” the article stated. “When the New York Giants got into a public contract dispute with star Lawrence Taylor, Trump wired $1 million into the linebacker’s bank account and signed Taylor to a future contract. To get Taylor back, the Giants 'gave me a million dollars and hated me ever after,' Trump recalls.”
How the Giants fought back and won
The New York Giants were not about to lose their defensive cornerstone without a fight. Recognizing the threat Trump posed, the franchise swiftly countered by matching the $1 million offer to Taylor, ensuring he remained with the team. The Giants ultimately reclaimed their star player, but Trump’s aggressive tactics left a lasting impression on the league.
Trump’s tenure with the USFL was defined by a relentless push to challenge the NFL’s dominance, but his bold strategy also contributed to the league’s downfall. His insistence on moving the USFL’s schedule to the fall to compete directly with the NFL, coupled with a failed antitrust lawsuit against the league, led to the USFL’s collapse in 1986.
Bill Tatham Jr., an owner of the USFL’s Arizona Outlaws, once said, “Donald was the big, crazy-spending owner, and the NFL guys were scared to death of him.”
