Mike Vrabel tried to keep the focus on football Wednesday, but the questions waiting for him had little to do with schemes or offseason workouts. The New England Patriots coach briefly addressed his personal life during a media session, saying things are “really good” at home after months of scrutiny tied to photos of him with NFL reporter Dianna Russini. Vrabel’s remarks were short and controlled, yet they quickly reignited online criticism that has followed him since the images surfaced earlier this offseason. Even as the Patriots push toward the 2026 season, the controversy continues to linger around their head coach.
Why are Mike Vrabel’s comments about family drawing backlash again?
Vrabel appeared relaxed while discussing work-life balance during Wednesday’s press conference. Asked how he has managed the offseason personally and professionally, he responded by emphasizing his family.
“I appreciate [that] my family is great, I love Jen [Vrabel], I love the boys,” Vrabel said. “This spring is focused on the coaching, staff, the players.”
The response might have been routine in another setting. Instead, it reopened criticism that has followed him since March, when photos published by Page Six showed Vrabel and Russini together at an adults-only resort in Sedona, Arizona. The pictures showed the two holding hands, eating breakfast together and spending time near the pool and hot tub area.
At first, neither publicly addressed the speculation surrounding the trip. But as the attention intensified, Vrabel later admitted he needed to take accountability for creating distractions around his family and organization. He also confirmed he attended counseling and missed the final day of the NFL Draft to handle personal matters.
That context shaped much of the online reaction Wednesday.
“So much that he cheated on her for 6 years.” One fan reacted.
“What a joke.” Another fan boldly said.
Others questioned whether Vrabel’s public image has taken permanent damage, especially as he attempts to move forward while leading one of the NFL’s most closely watched rebuilds.
Will the controversy become a distraction for the Patriots this season?
Inside the Patriots organization, the public stance has remained steady. Team officials have largely treated the matter as personal rather than football-related, continuing offseason preparations without publicly revisiting the controversy.
Still, the discussion refuses to disappear because Vrabel himself remains the face of the franchise’s transition period. Every appearance now carries added scrutiny, even when he avoids directly revisiting the allegations.
“Here would have been my question for Vrabel: Hey Mike how much credibility do you think you lost when your affair with Dianna Russini was uncovered and will this be a season long distraction for you and your team?” another fan said.
“Stands up there and just lies in the faces of everyone. Shameless clown. His wife and kids deserve a real man in their life.” Another fan shared their thoughts.
Vrabel and his wife, Jen, have been married since 1999 and share two sons. The couple was photographed together in Utah last month following counseling sessions, a sign that, at least publicly, they are attempting to move forward privately while the football world keeps watching publicly.
