“The Cowboys have tendered both exclusive rights FAs: CBs Josh Butler ($1.075m) and Reddy Steward ($1.005m),” Archer wrote on X on March 5. “They are under contract with the Cowboys and cannot sign with any other team.”


That decision keeps two depth pieces inside the system. Dallas Cowboys values continuity in the secondary. Communication often decides games in that unit, and players who already know the scheme carry extra value.

Steward proved that value in 2025. He appeared in all 17 games and handled a steady role on defence and special teams. The cornerback recorded 40 solo tackles, 23 assists, and 1.5 sacks. His versatility allowed Dallas to rotate personnel without losing stability in the backfield. Butler saw limited action last season. He played in one game and logged three solo tackles. Still, the Cowboys believe he provides depth and insurance if injuries hit during the long season.

The restructure spreads the cap impact across future seasons. Prescott still receives his money, but Dallas lowers the immediate hit on the books. The move created more than $30 million in relief for 2026 while pushing larger cap figures into 2027 and 2028.

The Dallas Cowboys have used this strategy before with major deals. Prescott’s four-year, $240 million extension, signed in 2024, was designed with these adjustments in mind.
