Craig Wolfley is no more: Steelers legend and Broadcaster passes away at 66
The Pittsburgh Steelers family has lost one of its most cherished voices. Craig Wolfley, former offensive lineman and long-time Steelers radio analyst, has passed away at the age of 66. Known for his infectious energy, sharp wit, and deep love for the game, Wolfley was more than just a player, he was a storyteller, mentor, and a true embodiment of Steelers' grit.
Born in Buffalo, New York, Wolfley carved his path to football greatness at Syracuse University, where he earned All-American honors and became a key figure in the program’s history. His dominance on the field led to his selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 1980 NFL Draft. Over the next decade, he became a fixture on Pittsburgh’s offensive line under legendary coach Chuck Noll, later closing out his playing career with the Minnesota Vikings.
Craig Wolfley’s competitive spirit didn’t end with football. He was a powerhouse in multiple disciplines, earning a black belt in jiu-jitsu, excelling in boxing, and even testing his strength on the global stage, finishing fifth in the 1981 World’s Strongest Man competition. His relentless drive was evident in everything he pursued.

Even after hanging up his cleats, Craig Wolfley remained a staple in Pittsburgh. He transitioned seamlessly into broadcasting, spending nearly two decades as a sideline reporter for Steelers radio. His insightful analysis and humorous takes made him a fan favorite. Alongside his longtime friend and former teammate, Tunch Ilkin, Wolfley co-hosted a popular sports talk show, bringing fans closer to the game with their dynamic chemistry.
Beyond football, Craig Wolfley’s heart was with the Pittsburgh community. He and Ilkin worked closely with the Light of Life Rescue Mission, dedicating their time to helping the city’s homeless population. His impact off the field was just as profound as his contributions on it.
With Ilkin’s passing in 2021, Wolfley often reflected on their brotherhood. Now, the two Steelers legends are reunited. His loss leaves a void in the hearts of Steelers Nation, but his voice, wisdom, and unwavering passion will be remembered forever.
