Cowboys reportedly offer Micah Parsons the biggest non-QB contract extension in NFL history

The Dallas Cowboys have proposed a historic contract to make Micah Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Although Parsons and team owner Jerry Jones agreed in principle, the absence of Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, may delay the deal. The Cowboys face financial challenges from previous large contracts and aim to finalize Parsons' deal soon.

The Dallas Cowboys are making a bold move to secure their defensive superstar, Micah Parsons, for the long term. According to Clarence Hill of All City DLLS, the Cowboys have extended an offer that would make Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. If accepted, the deal would surpass the recent contracts of Myles Garrett and Ja'Marr Chase, cementing Parsons’ status as one of the league's elite defenders. However, there’s a significant hurdle—the negotiations have taken place without the involvement of Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, and that could delay any agreement.

Micah Parsons offered a historic contract as Cowboys aim to secure their defensive superstar

Team owner Jerry Jones and Parsons have reportedly agreed to the terms in principle, yet the absence of his agent in discussions creates uncertainty. Historically, the Cowboys have engaged directly with players on contract matters, as highlighted by executive vice president Stephen Jones. “We talk to agents all the time,” Jones stated, via Hill. “Dak [Prescott] was one of those guys who wanted us when it was business, to talk to his agent. We had Zack Martin. We've had Jason Witten. We've had Tony Romo. We've had DeMarcus Lawrence that like to come up and talk about their business and certainly we've got an open-door policy when it comes to that, but we also have respect for our representatives as well. But Micah likes to talk about his business.”
While this approach has worked in the past, Parsons’ deal is far more complex. His agent, Mulugheta, has not been engaged in discussions since the NFL Scouting Combine, per Hill, and without his approval, the contract cannot be finalized. Given Mulugheta’s reputation for securing lucrative deals for his clients, it's unlikely Parsons will sign anything until his agent has a seat at the table. The Cowboys’ commitment to securing Parsons long-term comes amid financial challenges caused by prior massive contracts. Dak Prescott’s historic extension in September created a salary cap strain, forcing the team to make tough roster decisions, including parting ways with key players like DeMarcus Lawrence. More recently, in August 2024, the Cowboys inked star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million extension. While they managed to restructure his contract to free up $20 million in cap space, a significant portion of that is earmarked for Parsons' potential deal.Parsons has been a game-changer since entering the league in 2021. The former Penn State standout has consistently dominated opposing offenses, never recording fewer than 12 sacks in a season. Even in a year when he played just 13 games, his production remained elite. At just 25 years old, his prime years are still ahead, making him a cornerstone player that Dallas cannot afford to lose. Also Read: NFL owners set to vote on Green Bay Packers' push to ban Eagles’ ‘Tush Push’ play, sparking major controversyWhile Hill’s report indicates a major contract is on the table, nothing is official yet. Until Mulugheta and the Cowboys reach an agreement, Parsons’ future remains uncertain. Given his impact on the team and the league, Dallas must finalize the deal sooner rather than later—because if they don’t, another franchise certainly will.
