Cowboys’ defensive instability grows with Matt Eberflus firing

The Dallas Cowboys have once again hit the reset button on defense. On Tuesday, the franchise fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one season in Dallas, underlining a growing pattern of instability on one side of the ball.

Eberflus becomes the fourth different defensive coordinator the Cowboys will have in four seasons, following Dan Quinn and Mike Zimmer. While the move was not entirely unexpected, it highlights deeper issues that continue to plague the franchise.

A season that forced change

Dallas’ decision came after a disastrous 2025 campaign defensively. The Cowboys finished the season as the NFL’s worst scoring defense, allowing 30.1 points per game. That figure ranks as the second-highest points allowed per game in the franchise’s 66-year history.



The season ended with a 7-9-1 record and a disappointing Week 18 loss to the New York Giants, once again keeping Dallas out of the playoffs despite a productive offense.

Eberflus took responsibility for the struggles before his dismissal. “Ownership and accountability is right with me,” he said earlier this month, admitting the defense never found consistent rhythm or improvement.

While Eberflus shoulders the blame, context matters. Dallas entered the season already weakened after trading All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, a move that removed the unit’s most impactful defender before a snap was played.

Injuries only made matters worse. The Cowboys’ secondary was repeatedly hit, with key players missing time and coverage breakdowns becoming a weekly theme. Despite some midseason improvement against the run, Dallas finished among the league’s worst pass defenses, struggling to generate pressure and turnovers.



Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones acknowledged the issues go beyond one coach. “That defense represents everybody involved,” Jones said, making it clear personnel decisions will also be under review.

What happens next for the Cowboys?

The defensive collapse overshadowed a strong year from the Cowboys’ offense. Quarterback Dak Prescott ranked among the league leaders in passing yards, while the unit consistently produced points.

Prescott admitted it was frustrating to see his performances not translate into wins. Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb echoed that sentiment, calling the situation “upsetting” while acknowledging the business side of the NFL.

Dallas now begins another search for a defensive coordinator, with names like Brian Flores already being linked to the role. Whoever takes over will inherit a unit in need of both schematic clarity and better personnel.

For the Cowboys, the firing of Matt Eberflus is more than just a coaching change. It is a reminder that without long-term vision and stability on defense, even elite offensive production may not be enough to push the franchise forward in 2026 and beyond.
