NEW DELHI: The Detroit Lions secured a playoff spot on Saturday night, but a controversial call during their loss to the Dallas Cowboys has left fans questioning the officiating and the impact on their playoff seeding. In a dramatic turn of events, offensive lineman Taylor Decker appeared to catch Jared Goff's two-point conversion pass, giving the Lions a one-point lead over the Cowboys with less than a minute left. However, the officials ruled Decker ineligible, nullifying the play and leaving the Lions without the lead.Decker contends that he properly reported as eligible before the snap, as instructed by coach Dan Campbell. However, confusion arose as the officials mistakenly identified Dan Skipper as the player reporting. Skipper refuted this claim, stating he did not communicate with the official before the play."I did exactly what coach told me to do. I went to the ref, said report... I did what I was told to do, did how we did it in practice all week," Decker explained after the game.Campbell expressed frustration during the postgame press conference, highlighting that he had thoroughly explained the two-point play to the officials before kickoff.
The referee, Brad Allen, offered a conflicting account in a pool report, asserting that Skipper reported and Decker did not, leading to the penalty.
Video footage captured Decker conversing with Allen, who then communicated with the Cowboys' defense about Skipper's reported eligibility. The controversial call ultimately denied the Lions a potential game-winning moment.Despite the setback, the Lions have clinched a playoff spot, and there remains a possibility of facing the Cowboys again in the postseason. The disputed call has ignited discussions about officiating accuracy and the need for further scrutiny into the events of Saturday night.
