“Check all boxes”: Brett Favre endorses Fernando Mendoza as Raiders’ No. 1 pick, says NFL Combine can’t measure true greatness

The Las Vegas Raiders have begun initial discussions with former Indiana Hoosiers QB Fernando Mendoza to determine whether the Silver and Black will select him with the No. 1 overall pick.

With the 2026 NFL Draft weeks away, Brett Favre made his stance clear. In an interview with TMZ Sports, the Hall of Fame quarterback endorsed Indiana star Fernando Mendoza as the rightful No. 1 overall pick. Favre insisted the NFL Combine cannot measure the traits that truly matter. For him, Mendoza already checks every critical box for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Favre did not hesitate when asked about Mendoza’s draft stock. Speaking to TMZ Sports, he said, “I don't know if there's a better leader out there at the quarterback position, certainly not in college.” He followed that up with a pointed evaluation. “Just a classy, young man. I don't think he's overly talented, and I don't mean any disrespect that way. I think he does everything well enough to win. Mendoza checks all the boxes."

Those words matter. Favre won Super Bowl XXXI and built a 20-year NFL career on toughness and situational brilliance. When he says leadership outweighs raw arm strength, evaluators listen.

Mendoza chose not to throw at the 2026 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Instead, he will work out at Indiana’s Pro Day. That decision raised eyebrows. However, Favre brushed aside concerns. He reflected on his own draft process out of Southern Miss and stressed that no drill can measure clutch play or command in a huddle.

Fernando Mendoza's stats back up the praise. He led Indiana to a championship before declaring for the NFL Draft class. He consistently protected the ball, extended plays under pressure, and delivered in late-game situations. Coaches often cited his control at the line of scrimmage and his calm in tight fourth quarters.

After announcing his draft declaration, Mendoza thanked head coach Curt Cignetti, his teammates, and his family. “It is only with your support and the glory of God that I'm here today,” he said in his public statement.

The Raiders hold the top selection on April 23, 2026. Quarterback remains their biggest need. Favre’s endorsement adds weight to the belief that Mendoza fits that locker room. The Combine may highlight arm velocity 40 times. Favre argues that winning habits and poise decide Sundays. If Las Vegas agrees, Mendoza’s name should come off the board first.
