Chargers request interview with Ravens DC Zach Orr for defensive coordinator role

The Los Angeles Chargers have made their first big move this offseason to change their coaching staff by asking Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr to interview for their open defensive coordinator job.

This move comes after the Ravens hired Jesse Minter as their new head coach, a decision that left Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers without a defensive play-caller. With Harbaugh keen to build a strong identity on the defensive side, Orr has quickly emerged as one of the early names on the franchise’s radar.

Who is Zach Orr?

Zach Orr’s journey to becoming one of the most sought-after young defensive minds in the league has been anything but conventional.



A former Ravens linebacker Orr enjoyed a breakout playing season in 2016, earning second-team All-Pro honours before a congenital neck condition forced him into an early retirement at just 24. Instead of stepping away from football, Orr moved swiftly into coaching, beginning as an assistant in Baltimore before steadily rising through the ranks.

After stints as a defensive analyst and position coach, Orr was promoted to Ravens defensive coordinator in 2024 following Mike Macdonald’s departure. In a short span, he has built a reputation for strong linebacker development and for maintaining Baltimore’s aggressive, disciplined defensive system.


At just 31, he is already among the youngest coordinators in the league, and his familiarity with elite defensive schemes and player development has drawn attention across the NFL.

Why are the Chargers interested in Zach Orr?

The Chargers are entering a critical phase under Harbaugh, who is eager to bring stability and structure to a unit that struggled for consistency in 2025.

According to reports, the Chargers have also requested an interview with Rams assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant, suggesting they are casting a wide net before making a final decision.

Orr’s availability comes at a time of change in Baltimore. With John Harbaugh dismissed and a new head coach set to take charge, several top assistants are expected to move on. Defensive coordinator roles are often reshuffled during such transitions, making Orr’s potential exit more likely.

While the Ravens have not indicated whether they intend to retain Orr, the Chargers’ interest reflects how highly he is rated across the league.
