NEW DELHI: The potential hiring of Bill Belichick by the Atlanta Falcons is encountering hurdles, with The Athletic's Josh Kendall reporting a loss of momentum in the past week. Contrary to initial signs pointing toward a partnership, the Falcons are reportedly not adopting a "Belichick or bust" mentality and are exploring alternative coaching options.
While the 71-year-old coaching veteran reportedly dined with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, recent developments suggest a shift in the situation.
Blank is said to "desperately" want Belichick, envisioning him as the marquee coach the team needs.
However, the Falcons are not limiting their choices and are set to conduct a second interview with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh this week. Other candidates under consideration include Bobby Slowik from the Houston Texans,
Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions, and Mike Macdonald from the Baltimore Ravens.
With the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans having already filled their coaching vacancies, the Falcons exploring multiple options raises questions about Belichick's potential future in Atlanta.
The Raiders appointed Antonio Pierce, while the Titans are expected to bring in Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles also opted to retain their current head coaches.
While uncertainties surround Belichick's potential move to the Falcons, there is speculation that the situation might be posturing by Atlanta to negotiate better terms. Blank's supposed eagerness for the hire being public could impact the team's leverage.
