NEW DELHI: A sportsbook was forced to remove odds on the potential successor to Bill Belichick as the head coach of the New England Patriots due to a surge in bets favoring Jerod Mayo.
SportsBetting.ag initially listed Mayo as the -350 favorite to become the next Patriots head coach. However, within an hour, those odds had shortened to -700, prompting the sportsbook to take down the market.
Mayo, 37, was a first-round pick by the Patriots in 2008 and played all eight of his NFL seasons under Belichick, establishing himself as one of the league's premier inside linebackers. After retiring, he joined Belichick's coaching staff, focusing on inside linebackers for the past five years.
While Mayo is considered a logical choice for continuity within the franchise, another contender for the position is Mike Vrabel. The 48-year-old, who played eight seasons for the Patriots, was fired as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans earlier this week. Despite lacking head-coaching experience, Vrabel brings significant tenure as an NFL player and has quickly become a sought-after candidate.
Vrabel was listed at +250 by the sportsbook, making him a strong contender. Following closely was Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson at +400. Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien had +1400 odds, rounding out the top contenders for the head coaching position.
As the Patriots undergo a significant coaching transition, the focus is not solely on the incoming coach but also on the future of Bill Belichick. The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach expressed his excitement for the future, indicating his intention to continue coaching. At 71 years old, Belichick is expected to attract interest from multiple teams, with the Atlanta Falcons emerging as the +100 favorite to hire him.
The Falcons, who recently parted ways with Arthur Smith, are reportedly eager to engage with Belichick and are willing to offer him full control of the football operation as a coach, general manager, and vice president. While the Falcons have a financially robust owner in Arthur Blank, addressing the quarterback situation, especially after the Patriots' struggles since Tom Brady's departure, remains a crucial consideration.
Bill Belichick next team odds
- Atlanta Falcons (+100)
- Washington Commanders (+300)
- Tennessee Titans (+400)
- Carolina Panthers (+700)
- Los Angeles Chargers (+800)
- Las Vegas Raiders (+900)
- Seattle Seahawks (+2500)
