Since his college days with the Texas Longhorns,
Bijan Robinson has drawn comparisons to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. These comparisons bolstered him to secure the 8th overall pick with the Atlanta Falcons in the 2023
NFL Draft.
In spring 2024, at a press conference, the 23-year-old three-down running back said he wanted to be used the way the 49ers use versatile McCaffrey. In the 2025 offseason, Robinson reached out to Christian to train together. They spent a month training and working out in Studio City area, Los Angeles, where McCaffrey’s younger brother Luke also joined.
Mutual respect triumphs over team rivalry
McCaffrey and Robinson play for different NFL teams, but their perpetual drive to help each other improve goes beyond competitive spirit. This is when friendship overpowers sportsmanship.
Supportive mentorship matters more than being opponents. Mutual respect triumphs over team rivalry. The running back position reportedly matters more than team representation. An individual is recognized for their position rather than their team.
"It was great,” Robinson told ESPN said in July. “Me and him giving each other so many tips and feeding off the knowledge from each other on the field.
And we worked for the whole month, so I got to see how he worked, he got to see how I worked, and we got to put it together, and it was cool.
Two guys coming together trying to make each other better, and he taught me a whole bunch of nuanced moves that I got to learn on the field, and I did the same with him.”
“Oh, man, he’s inspiring,” 29-year-old McCaffrey told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I learned that he’s a tough guy to train with, if you’re trying to be as athletic as he is. I don’t have enough good things to say about him.
He’s got everything you would want in a [running] back: speed, quickness, power, explosion…thing I love most about him is just the kind of guy he is.”
Subtle social media shoutouts after individual victories
In the Week 17 San Francisco vs. Chicago Bears matchup, McCaffrey won [42-38]. Christian collected 181 total scrimmage yards and one touchdown. In the Week 17 Atlanta vs. Los Angeles Rams showdown, Robinson won [27-24]. Bijan recorded 195 rushing yards and 34 receiving yards. How do the two send heartfelt social media shoutouts to each other’s performances? By sharing a viral wholesome offseason workout photo on Instagram Story.
Bijan shared a monochrome photo on his Instagram Story of himself and Christian, their hands clasped in what appears to be a fist pump. McCaffrey reshared it on his Instagram Story.
49ers explosive player is wearing a black form-fitting workout tank top or compression shirt, black athletic shorts, and white shoes. Falcons all-round player is shirtless and likely has a towel or his workout t-shirt over his one shoulder. He is wearing black, loose-fitting athletic joggers and Nike shoes.
The duo is seated on the second step of the stairs. Christian is candidly looking down, while Bijan looks right into the camera with a bright smile on his face.
