Cam Taylor-Britt isn’t one for the usual sports clichés. This season, the Cincinnati Bengals cornerback has taken a refreshingly bold approach, offering up blunt and candid assessments of his opponents.

Last week, he didn’t mince words when discussing Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, remarking that Worthy can "run straight." Then, in Sunday’s matchup against Kansas City, Taylor-Britt backed up his talk with an incredible one-handed interception while covering the very same Worthy, despite the Bengals' loss.
As Monday's showdown with the Washington Commanders approaches, Taylor-Britt shared his thoughts on what he's observed from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
"Composed. They don't make him do a lot. They keep it really simple for him," the corner said, via ESPN's Ben Baby. "Nice college offense, (Kliff) Kingsbury, the OC, so they love to move guys around here and there, but just keep it real simple for him. I heard his pass percentage is very high, but he's only throwing short routes, some intermediate stuff, quick throws." (via: NFL)
The comment from Kingsbury stands out as the most provocative, but Taylor-Britt’s assessment of what the Commanders have asked of Daniels so far isn’t off base. According to Next Gen Stats, a staggering 41.2% of Daniels' 53 pass attempts have been behind the line of scrimmage—the highest rate in the NFL, with Tua Tagovailoa coming in second at 37.1%. Additionally, only 3.9% of Daniels' throws have been deep attempts (20+ air yards), tied with Jacoby Brissett for the lowest rate in the league heading into the week. Daniels is currently 0-2 on those deep passes.
Coach Dan Quinn emphasized after Week 1 that he wants the rookie to focus on extending pass plays rather than immediately taking off and running.
Transitioning into the NFL is always a learning curve for rookies, but Daniels has stood out among the trio of first-year starters. He's shown flashes of playmaking ability with his mobility, quick release in Kingsbury’s offense, and a knack for avoiding costly mistakes. That said, there’s still room for growth, especially in expanding the intermediate and deep passing game. It’s worth noting that Taylor-Britt's comments don’t criticize Daniels’ talent at all.
What makes Taylor-Britt's remarks noteworthy isn't any criticism of the Commanders' offense, but the fact that he stepped outside the usual bland player responses. If anything, CTB might be setting himself up for a future in football analysis.
