The moment arrived before a single snap was played, inside a quiet huddle that carried far more weight than noise. As the New England Patriots prepared for their first playoff game in seven years, one voice cut through the tension. It did not come from a coach. It came from
Stefon Diggs, a veteran who understood what belief looks like when it is earned, not handed out.
For a young Patriots roster still earning national respect, Diggs framed the night in emotional terms. Not schemes. Not stats. Identity. His words landed because they reflected how the team felt all season. Overlooked. Questioned. Still standing. Minutes later, that message turned into a 16-3 playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.
Stefon Diggs explained why belief fueled the Patriots’ playoff edge
Captured by the Patriots’ in-house media team, Diggs gathered his teammates and delivered a blunt, fiery message before kickoff.
“Hey, be violent, man!” Diggs said. “Be smart, but when in doubt, crash the (expletive) out. It’s us vs. them, man. Ain’t nobody like us. Ain’t nobody believe in us. I like us, man. Go lay in on the line for your brother, man.”
After the win, Diggs expanded on that mindset when asked why he felt the Patriots lacked outside belief. He pointed to youth, perception, and steady growth across the season.
“I think from my vantage point, obviously, we’ve got a different scope of things,” Diggs said. “But y’all in the media, y’all see each and every day. I don’t think nobody really liked us. Nobody believed in us. We were a young team, we’ve got a young quarterback, and throughout the season, we just grew. We just grew, and we kind of grew together.”
The Patriots finished 14-3 under head coach Mike Vrabel, yet still faced skepticism due to schedule strength. Diggs embraced that doubt.
“So why I said it is because it’s the truth. Nobody likes us but us and I love us. I like us a lot,” he said. “I tell them every time, as we continue to grow and become that team that we believe, (expletive) they’ll start liking us eventually.”
The message worked. Belief showed up first. The scoreboard followed.
