Baker Mayfield led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the wild card round. This, in itself, is an achievement; after winning against the pawns, losing to the knights (in this case, Commanders!) is a heartbreaking moment.
At the press conference, one could easily become teary-eyed listening to the quarterback’s heartfelt confession. It was heartbreaking to witness the best NFL player of the 2024 season become vulnerable, acknowledge his defeat, and take full responsibility for it.
Three fumbles this season for the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Talking about the fumbles this season, Baker Mayfield shared,
“It comes back to me. Just timing it up correctly, the first one all year that happened on, the timing of it, not great, being backed up, the defense had just done a hell of a job getting us the ball, another fourth down stop, and yeah, unfortunate, but that falls on me.”.

Press inquired,
“How do you look back on this season?”
Baker positively responded, “I believe in this team; I believe we had the talent, the coaching staff, and everybody around us helped us to go far. But looking back, the big picture is this group fought.”.
Baker is proud of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookies
He shared, “There’s a lot to be proud of. And, in this moment, that’s hard to see, but there was a lot of young guys that are going to be in this roster next year that had to step up and did it in a big way.
So, that should build confidence for those guys, knowing who they are as players and as men in adverse situations to be able to step up like they did; that’s something to be proud of.”.
It is a loss that feels too personal for Bucs fans—some sympathized with Baker, and some blamed him
On the X post shared by the official Tampa Bay Buccaneers account
The caption read, "Final." But the comments for the post were at cross purposes.
One X user wrote,
“As a honest Bucs fan it’s time we move on from Baker. He’s good enough to get us to the playoffs but not good enough to take us to the Super Bowl. We should trade him to the Browns for draft comp.”.
Another user sided with Baker and wrote,
“I don’t fault baker on this. If his WRs used their hands, they would have blasted the commanders. It would be nice if the buccs defense would exist. Chris Godwin when we needed him the most... Damn what a sad end to the season.”.
A third user all too proud of the Bucs, wrote,
“Allowed Washington their first playoff win in 20 years.”.
