New York Jets right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a significant arm injury, which could be a torn triceps, that could keep him out for the rest of the 2025 NFL season in a shocking turn of events only days before the team's opener against Pittsburgh. Even with a second opinion, it sounds like a high-profile loss for one of the team's biggest stars seems likely to be what's coming to pass, according to a handful of reports.
Injury details and career context
This latest update sounds like he sustained it during Tuesday's practice. He was seen going into the locker room, and once he didn't come back out, the concern was immediate for Vera-Tucker. That makes the timing hit even harder, as he'd only recently been named a team captain for the Jets, which speaks to how much of a leadership role he had developed for himself both on and off the field.
But this latest setback is a continuation of a troubling pattern for him as a former first-round pick. Vera-Tucker's 2022 season was ended by a torn triceps, and then he ruptured his Achilles tendon in 2023. He has already had these injuries, so keep him to only 43 starts in his first four NFL seasons. A player who was once seen as the potential face of the offensive line for the next decade, and who is as talented and versatile as they come, sustainable health has eluded him so far in his career.
What this means for the Jets’ offense
Vera-Tucker was a huge part of what the Jets had planned on offense, and losing him is a monumental blow to that flavor of game plan. That line was supposed to be a major part of a run-heavy offense with quarterback Justin Fields, and Vera-Tucker was believed to be a key player to build it around. Losing him will mean some shuffling of the offensive line has to happen quickly to keep the cohesion that is needed to protect the run and pass game.
For example, one option is to move center Joe Tippmann to right guard, which would allow Josh Myers to step in at center. Depth players like Xavier Newman-Johnson are also in the mix, but none offer the same level of experience or impact that Vera-Tucker does. No matter how the Jets change things going forward, the offensive line will come under even more pressure in Week 1 from a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that is always looking for ways to apply pressure on the quarterback.

Things are looking bleak for Vera-Tucker, with most reports indicating that he won't be back until much later in, if not entirely out, of the 2025 season. Surgery is the most probable next step, subject to official medical assessment. But the short-term disruption to the Jets' offense is the least of the problems his absence causes; even more pressing are the long-term problems with his durability and future in the league. And while he still could, a major injury missed in 2025 could change things this way as well before he hits free agency in 2026.
As for the Jets, the next steps will be stabilizing the offensive line and adjusting offensive schemes to account for the loss. As the team now has depth on paper, losing a player of Vera-Tucker's caliber right before the season opener is a great loss to the roster and new head coach Aaron Glenn's ability to adjust on the run.
