NEW DELHI: Alabama's football program is grappling with the potential departure of key players, as left tackle Kadyn Proctor and All-America safety Caleb Downs express intentions to enter the transfer portal. The possible exits come as a significant challenge for new head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Proctor made his decision public on Wednesday via social media, while Downs' plans were shared on social media by Deuce Recruiting, where his father Gary Downs serves as the national recruiting director.
Gary Downs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
If Proctor and Downs opt not to return to the Crimson Tide, it would mark a notable setback for Coach DeBoer. The duo, both top recruits in the 2023 class, would join receiver Isaiah Bond, who has already departed, ranking as the fourth-highest transfer in the 247Sports composite rankings.
Caleb Downs, who led Alabama in tackles as a freshman, earned second-team All-America honors and was named Southeastern Conference newcomer of the year by The Associated Press. He recorded an impressive 107 tackles, making him the first Alabama freshman since 1970 to lead the team in tackles. Downs was a force on defense, also contributing with forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, and even scoring a touchdown on a punt return.
Kadyn Proctor started every game at left tackle for Alabama, showcasing his talent and potential impact on the offensive line.
This potential exodus follows the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban, which has already seen several players transferring out of the program. The departure of Coach Travaris Robinson to Georgia as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach adds to the coaching staff changes.
While the Crimson Tide faces uncertainties, Coach DeBoer is tasked with managing these challenges and potentially reshaping the team to maintain its competitive edge in the demanding landscape of college football.
