A Dad Sold His Signed Jersey to Take His Daughter to a Playoff Game—Then Matthew Stafford Gave Him a Gift He’ll Never Forget

Sometimes, sports are about more than just wins and losses. Detroit Lions fan Bryson Machonga learned this the hard way when he sold his prized Matthew Stafford jersey to afford playoff tickets. Though the Lions did not win, he had an unexpected happy ending due to Stafford himself.

Dedicated Lions fan Bryson Machonga had to make a tough decision and take his 8-year-old daughter to the NFC Divisional Round game against Washington in Detroit. He sold some of his most precious sports memorabilia, including an autographed Matthew Stafford jersey, to make it possible. Alas, the Lions lost, but Machonga's story soon took a surprising turn.

After The Detroit Free Press wrote about his sacrifice, someone forwarded that article to Stafford. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback didn't hesitate, really, to step in and make it right.

Machonga was surprised when a Rams employee called him, asking for his address. Stafford wanted to send him a replacement jersey—but one was not just any jersey. He personally mailed a game-worn jersey from the Lions' 2014 season, marking one of his better winning records (11-5) in Detroit.

Machonga said he received an autographed jersey from Stafford and a heartfelt message: "To Bryson—Thanks for all the support."

Machonga could hardly believe it. "I was over the moon. Disbelief at first, but then it turned into resounding joy," he told The Detroit Free Press. "Stafford had no reason to do this. He's not our quarterback anymore. He had nothing to gain, yet he still went out of his way during a playoff week."

Matthew Stafford's Lasting Impact On and Off the Field

Stafford has long since left Detroit, but his legacy remains. A first-overall pick in the 2009 draft, he played 12 seasons as the Lions' franchise quarterback, leaving behind records in passing yards (45,109), touchdowns (282), and completions (3,898).

His departure in 2021 led to a blockbuster trade that benefited both sides—Stafford secured a Super Bowl ring with the Rams, while Detroit landed Jared Goff, who led them to a 15-2 season and an MVP-caliber year.



Although Stafford's Rams lost this year's playoff match to the Eagles, Stafford remains closely related to Detroit. The gesture in the form of thoughtfulness ensures that even a long way away from Los Angeles, he would appreciate the city which made him a great figure. Goff is Lions' new quarterback; however, nobody would forget how much Stafford's influence and philanthropy had lasted so long.
