49ers secure Deommodore Lenoir with five-year, $92 million extensions

Drafted in the fifth round in 2021, Lenoir, now 25, has emerged as a key player in the 49ers’ defense. His rise began to accelerate last season when he transitioned into the slot, where he showed his versatility. In just a few seasons, he’s compiled impressive career stats, including 233 tackles, six interceptions, and 23 passes defensed across 56 games. This season alone, Lenoir has tallied 53 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. Notably, he scored his first touchdown by returning a fumble 61 yards, highlighting his impact on special teams.

Pro Football Focus notes that Lenoir has effectively split time between the slot and the outside, proving reliable with a mere 65 passer rating allowed on targets thrown into his coverage. His skills have allowed him to permit no touchdown passes this season while maintaining six passes defensed and contributing to the team's defensive scoreboard by returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown.

Lenoir’s rapid development into one of the NFL’s notable cornerbacks aligns with the 49ers’ vision. With two key cornerbacks facing free agency, including Charvarius Ward, securing Lenoir was considered a priority. His new contract, averaging $18.4 million annually, places him 12th among cornerbacks in terms of salary, marking a substantial pay raise from his current $3.116 million base salary.

This extension reflects the 49ers' foresight in managing cap space effectively. By finalizing Lenoir’s deal now, the team sets itself up financially for a forthcoming investment in quarterback Brock Purdy, who is expected to command a lucrative contract soon.

As the 49ers aim to build a defense primed for long-term success, locking in Lenoir demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a formidable secondary and creating a balanced roster, ultimately setting the stage for championship contention.
