A curious thing happened during Thursday night’s game when San Francisco linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to play in the third quarter. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw who tore his Achilles returned for the 49ers’ Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Rams. This led to Campbell’s being bumped from the starting line-up, which obviously left Campbell disappointed.

“Campbell Definitely Hurt The Team,” Says Teammate Charvarius Ward

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Campbell, who’s a nine-year veteran, “didn’t want to play today” in the third quarter. The 49ers signed Campbell to a one-year deal in March to replace Greenlaw, who tore his left Achilles during the Super BowlNeedless to say, this didn’t go down well with some of Campbell’s teammates. Coach Shanahan confirmed that this will not be a distraction to the game. “People notice, but when someone says that, you move on,” he said. “You don’t deal with that anymore,” he said.
Tight end George Kittle and cornerback Charvarius Ward shared their frustration with Campbell’s inaction. "It's hard to win football games when someone doesn't want to play football," Kittle said. "I think that’s ignorant. And I think it’s just dumb.
It’s just stupid, and it’s very immature. I just don’t see how you could do something like that to your team.”
Ward, who’s known for his honesty vented out his frustration at Campbell’s decision to not play and even went so far as to say he will be cut. “He’s a professional. He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could’ve told me that before the game. So I feel like that was some sucker sh*t that he did. It definitely hurt the team. Cause you know, Dee [Winters] went down, and we needed a linebacker. And I think Flan [Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles] was banged up, too. So, for him to do that, that’s some sucker stuff to me. He’s probably going to get cut soon,” said Ward.As per head coach Shanahan, Campbell did not want to return to the field for the third quarter. Maybe that went through his mind, too… and if I’m the coaching staff, I’m cutting you.”The Los Angeles Rams defeated San Francisco, 12-6, and were able to eliminate the defending NFC-champion 49ers from playoff contention.
