49ers’ Brock Purdy Makes Sad Admission About Team’s Loss Against LA Rams
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy took the league by storm in his rookie season and led the team to a division title and the NFC Championship Game in his first year. His excellent 2023-24 campaign, led him to a Super Bowl appearance, but his team’s recent 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football has been heavily criticised.
During a rainy night, at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, the Rams secured a narrow victory against the 49ers. While both defenses performed exceptionally well, the offences had difficulty establishing any momentum. The 49ers' offensive performance was particularly lacklustre.
Purdy could only make half of his pass attempts (14-of-31) for 142 yards, and his fourth-quarter interception near the end zone took a toll on the team. But Purdy is not the only one to blame for the team’s rough offense. The offensive line failed to protect their QB, with Purdy carrying the pressure all night long. However, the end result could have been different if Deebo Samuel had caught the ball when the 49ers were gaining momentum.
Moreover, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell decided to opt out of the game last minute, as per head coach Kyle Shanahan and did not join his teammates in the second half. So, clearly Purdy isn’t the one who should carry all of the blame. But the third-year player faced the press post the match and took accountability.
“I had to be better for this team and didn’t play my best tonight,” he said after the loss, via NFL on CBS. “Got to watch the film and see what happened, where my mindset was at with each play. But I just feel like I had a lot of plays left out there that I could have made for our team. Thought the defense and special teams played so good. That’s what’s hurting me. I feel like I failed the team.”
While fans came together to console Purdy, former NFL player Shannon Sharpe also addressed Purdy’s performance during the latest episode of The Nightcap podcast. Sharpe blamed Deebo for the drop and reiterated that his failure to catch the ball cost the 49ers the win.
“Purdy was spraying the ball over the field. But he did have an opportunity to get a TD and Deebo dropped it. He anticipated the scene and he had his mind on probably scoring a TD and he just flat-out dropped it. Dropped a Touchdown. There is no other way around it,” he said.
