Cam Newton recently shared his thoughts on the NFL’s drug testing policy, responding to bold claims made by former cornerback Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones. Jones had alleged that he managed to evade the league’s drug testing protocols for 14 years by using a clean sample, raising questions about the effectiveness of the system. Newton, a former NFL MVP, expressed skepticism over Jones' statements, citing his own experience with the league’s strict testing procedures.
Cam Newton Weighs in on NFL’s Drug Testing Policy After Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones’ Controversial Claims
Speaking on the 4th and 1 podcast, Newton remarked, “Who am I to tell him he’s lying? I just know my experience with drug tests and getting watched by the man… It’s hard to do… 14 years?” Newton highlighted the challenging nature of the testing process, where urine collectors closely monitor players during sample collection, making it hard to cheat the system.
Jones’ claims emerged during his appearance on Deion Sanders’ Tubi show We Got Time Today. Jones boldly stated that he never used his own sample during drug tests, admitting, “I’ve never used my piss for a piss test. Not one time. Not one time.” Jones maintained that he knew how to work around the system despite the league’s strict protocols. In response, Sanders expressed disbelief, saying, “That can’t happen today,” to which Jones confidently replied, “It can happen if you know what you’re doing. Don’t say it can’t happen, Pop.”
Newton, however, cast doubt on the plausibility of Jones’ story, questioning how it could have gone unnoticed for so long. He also raised concerns about the intrusive nature of the league’s testing procedures. “It was intrusive… It’s almost like, why are you looking so hard?” Newton commented. “It was semi-questionable.” His remarks reflect the uncomfortable balance between maintaining a strict policy and respecting players’ privacy.
Pacman Jones Talks Bengals, Cheating NFL Drug Tests, NFL Free Agency!
The NFL’s drug testing process has evolved over the years, but certain aspects remain stringent. According to the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), all players are required to undergo one annual test, which does not include THC screening. However, THC testing may occur randomly after games. Free agents are typically tested within a week of signing with a team. If notified in the morning during the season, the player must complete the test before afternoon activities. If notified in the afternoon, the test must be completed within an hour after activities conclude.
In the offseason, players can be tested up to six times within a 24-hour window after being notified, with the notification often coming via voicemail or text. These protocols highlight how closely the league monitors drug use among players, which makes Jones’ claims even more controversial.
Jones, who retired in 2019, has been an outspoken advocate for THC. When asked by co-host Rocsi Diaz if he would have been a different player had the NFL been more lenient on cannabis, Jones responded affirmatively. He also revealed that he had spoken with the NFL about its drug policies, expressing his belief that no sport should test for THC. While the NFL has softened its stance on THC in recent years, it remains part of the league’s substance abuse and performance-enhancing drug policy.
Jones’ career was marked by both on-field success and off-field controversy. Drafted by the Tennessee Titans as the sixth overall pick in 2005, Jones spent most of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. However, he faced multiple suspensions, including a year-long suspension in 2007 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy and a six-game suspension in 2008 after an alcohol-related incident in Dallas.
