PERTH: The Indian team practised on Tuesday without chief coach
Duncan Fletcher who is yet to return from Cape Town where he is attending the funeral of his father-in-law.
Fletcher left last Wednesday and India played against the UAE in his absence on Saturday. According to media manager RN Baba, Fletcher was supposed to join the team on Monday but having missed the deadline, no one is sure of the date of his arrival.
India are scheduled to play their next game against West Indies at WACA on Friday, and it remains to be seen if Fletcher will rejoin the team before that or go straight to New Zealand where India play their final two league games.
LLOYD LECTURES GAYLE The West Indies had nets at the Murdoch University ground for the second day with
Chris Gayle, who has been struggling with his back, giving batting practice a miss. The enigmatic, hard-hitting opener who just a few days ago had scored the first double century in ODIs, looked far from cheerful. When a photographer said to him: "Chris, smile", his repartee was "Chris tired."
Later, chief selector
Clive Lloyd took some time out with him and a pep talk followed for over half-an-hour. The official word from the West Indies camp was that Gayle has been suffering from back pain for a couple of years now. Despite being in pain, he will be available for the clash against India on Friday.
INDIAN MEDIA HOUNDED The Indian media contingent was hounded by securitymen when the team arrived for a training session at the Murdoch University ground. The representatives were first made to vacate the media room to make space for the players to have lunch. Later, the reporters were cordoned off far behind the barricades during the team's practice session. Normalcy was restored after much resentment.
