West Indies vs India 2016: Umpires have bad day in office
GROS ISLET (ST. LUCIA): The third Test between India and West Indies has been a bad one for umpires.
On Saturday morning, as India went for quick runs, two successive umpiring errors caused much heartburn in the Indian camp. First, Rohit Sharma was declared leg-before by umpire Nigel Llong even though the ball had hit the pad after getting an inside edge from the bat.
Then, Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed caught behind off a big no ball which Llong failed to notice.
1x1 polls
India captain Virat Kohli, who could not believe that a no ball was not called, gestured to Saha from the dressing room, telling the batsman how big a no ball it was. Llong didn’t refer it to the third umpire.
Even Darren Bravo's dismissal in West Indies' first innings was controversial. TV replays showed that Ishant Sharma had overstepped but third umpire Gregory Brathwaite somehow thought otherwise and ruled in favour of the bowler.
Luck not with Rohit
Rohit Sharma’s comeback into the Test team has been quite an eventful one, though a bit disappointing for the player himself. First, his selection itself raised eyebrows. Then, in the first innings, he got out for 9 after looking to have played himself in. While fielding at forward short-leg, he was twice hit on the helmet in West Indies’ first innings, the first blow from the bat of Darren Bravo a particularly nasty one. Rohit also missed a catch at short midwicket when Shane Dowrich skied Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Friday. The worst, however, was when he was declared out leg-before on Saturday off an inside edge.
