BANGALORE: On Sunday, when the national selection committee sits down to pick the three teams for the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, the accent will be on all-rounders.
The selectors will use the opportunity to not just identify the best of One-day talent available in the country but will also try and spot some potential fast-bowling allrounders who can possibly fill the number six spot in the Test squad and double up as the third seamer in a five-man bowling attack.
The Challenger series is to be played in Cuttack from October 23-26.
Selection committee chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth confirmed this on Saturday. "We realise the need to have an allrounder at that number and are doing our best to find the right people," he said. In fact, the selection committee is casting its net far and wide to ensure that it does not miss out on talent.
To that extent Srikkanth and Narendra Hirwani, the selector from Central Zone, could be seen holding lengthy discussions with NCA director Dav Whatmore on Saturday.
